How do injured runners, health and wellness patrons, and cyclists overcome and eliminate annoying sports injuries that keep from sport and activity?
It’s been a few months now. Why am I still dealing with an injury that is limiting me from being active and participating in my favorite sport?
Does that sound like you?
Is that how you feel too?
It’s been a few months now. Why am I still dealing with an injury that is limiting me from being active and participating in my favorite sport?
Most people that I’ve encountered believe that if they take a couple days off to “rest”, that they will be able to return quickly to exercise or sport. But when they attempt to return they are still restricted and the injury is likely worse than before they began resting. When you are resting there is little to no pain but as soon as you return the pain intensifies no matter how much rest you give it... it doesn’t to seem to be improving...
Does that sound like you?

Another common reality that we see all the time is that people seek out physician who, due to lack of knowledge of musculoskeletal injuries, prescribe “rest” and give anti-inflammatory and/or pain killers to cope with the pain. Four weeks rolls around and you are back at the physician because it hasn’t gone away only to be given more rest, stronger pain killers, and referred out to an orthopedic surgeon for further testing.
In all reality when it comes to sprains, strains, and the majority of other sports injuries complete rest is rarely-to-never the best advice.
You may be confused as to why you are hearing two different things when it comes to sports injuries. Maybe you think you have a back problem but it’s actually an issue in your hips that is driving your back pain.
With sports injuries the site of the pain likely isn’t the problematic issue at all. I like to explain the human body as a chain. One weak link in the chain can put undue stress on the other "links" which is where our pain symptoms present themselves. If you rest for too long, the four-to-six months that I alluded to earlier will allow not only the original issue to worsen, but for other areas to become issues as a result of poor injury management.

The confusion over “rest” often leads to procrastination of seeking out help, and making a decision about what to do to correct the issue, and return back to normal exercise. Worse yet, many people just wind up accepting that their days of activity are over, as if it’s normal, as if that’s the way it has to be...
If you are currently frustrated and living with a sports injury, here are 7 reasons why it could be lasting longer than it should.
1. You thought it would go away on its own.
2. You went to the doctor were given support, told to rest, and given pain killers, but none of those are actually returning you back to where you were prior to all of this.
3. A family member or friend told you that you are more prone to injuries as you age, so you just accepted it.
4. You’ve sought out help from your primary care, ortho, and potentially other physical therapists, but nothing they said or did has helped.
5. You’ve tried ice, heat, and supportive bracing but they haven’t returned you to activity or eased the the underlying issue.
6. You thought it would be a good idea to rest due to the intense pain, but you it still irritates you daily.
7. You decided that a sports massage, but all that did was increase symptoms or maybe it helped for 24-48 hours, and the pain likely returned with a vengeance.
If you have tried one or more of the scenarios listed above, we would love for you to book a discovery call or visit with us at Elite Physio. I know that it may be frustrating, but it’s actually a good thing because now you know what doesn’t work, and are closer to finding the one thing that does.
SERVICES OFFERED
Dry Needling w/ Stimulation
Dry needling with electrical stimulation is a technique utilized to reduce pain, decrease muscle tone, and retrain dysfunctional tissue. This allows for faster restoration of global movement patterns following injury.
Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Massage (IASTM)
IASTM is an intervention to improve myosfasical dysfunction (Skin, muscle, fascia, tendon, and scar tissue) that has resulted from daily movement habits or injury. By applying pressure to the tissue abnormal restriction can be “broken down” and reabsorbed into the body resulting in a remolding of the dysfunctional tissue.
Joint Mobilizations
Joint mobilization is a formed of manual therapy where the joint is passively moved at various speeds and amplitudes. This intervention is effective for restoring range of motion and reducing pain.
Mobilization With Movement (MWM)
Mobilization with movement combines the natural glide of a joint with simultaneous limb motion. MWM is used to improve joint and limb range of motion allowing for pain-free global movement patterns to be restored.
Blood Flow Restriction
Blood flow restriction allows individuals to load various tissues earlier in the rehab process through the occlusion of blood flow to working muscle. This practice simulates a response that mimics that of high loading/high intensity training without high intensity/loaded exercises.
Exercise Prescription / Movement
The ultimate goal of all performance physical therapy is to restore pain-free movement patterns. Once movement competency is established individuals will be progressed into various loading strategies to improve strength within those patterns.
